About

Explore the Montcaret Gallo-Roman villa, 60 km east of Bordeaux between Saint-Émilion and Bergerac. The site features private baths with mosaic floors and other major remains. Set in the Dordogne Valley near the Montaigne castle, it’s an ideal historic stop between Bordeaux and Périgord.

The ruins show how rural villas evolved into monumental residences favored by the Gallo-Roman and later Visigoth elite. Built as leisure and agricultural centers in the 1st–3rd centuries, these estates later became hubs for social life and tax collection.
